As a concerned parent and professional working mother of three, Alexis Gerdes is running for school board to help our students grow academically, physically and emotionally for a prosperous future. She understands the everyday effects board decisions have on our kids and has the courage to stand up for our children. Alexis is committed to preparing all VBCPS students for success as individuals and future career professionals.
EMPOWERING PARENTS & COMMUNITY
At the center of quality schools is the empowerment of parents and guardians. Alexis believes the school board and community should work together toward the common goal of achieving the very best for our students. Parents, teachers and community leaders should have a voice in decisions that affect our students and their ability to lead in the future workforce. This begins with transparent communication from our school board.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
All students should be challenged to reach their highest potential. Curriculum content must be fact-based, without bias and designed to encourage critical and independent thinking. Teachers should be provided the necessary resources for each student to achieve academic excellence and be supported by a school board who values them. We also need to expand opportunities for skills-based education and encourage more apprenticeships and licenses. There is so much attention on college education, while many good paying jobs in trades go unfilled. We must prepare and applaud students who seek vocational career paths.
SCHOOL SAFETY
The safety of our students should come above all else! Alexis is committed to supporting School Resource Officers (SRO) and School Security Officers (SSO) in all schools. She believes students, teachers, staff and parents should all feel protected in educational environments. As a parent, she believes an emphasis on student character is essential toward empowered students and a positive school environment. Schools must partner with parents to develop responsible and respectful citizens. She believes character education should be the basis of a student’s academic success.
FISCAL ACCOUNTABILITY
There is far too much administrative overhead in the school system and not enough reaching the classroom. Character is not just for students. One way Alexis will put character into action is by being accountable to the taxpayer. She will represent our community not only in voice, but also in her commitment to fiscal responsibility. Money should be dedicated to what matters most- the academic and personal success of our students.
